What is Macromedia Flash?

Macromedia Flash is a special Internet based program that allows ELTHAM Web designers to improve your Knowledge Network experience.  It enables us to add exciting presentation objects (including movies) to our web pages that help us better communicate with you.

Flash is now used extensively throughout the World Wide Web, and is fast becoming a part of many areas of the ELTHAM Knowledge Network.  In fact the introduction screen to this area showing the Knowledge Network is a Flash Movie.

How do I know if I can see a Flash based web page?

Chances are, you can already view Flash web pages so there's nothing you need to do.  If your computer is not "Flash ready", when you open a web page that has Flash, it will not show on your screen, but it will open a dialogue box asking if you would like to download Macromedia Flash.  Click OK and follow the instructions.  It only takes a few seconds and will give you greater access to both the Knowledge Network and the Internet in general.

Password/Login Problems

In order to maintain security, User Identification and passwords are an important part of the KNOWLEDGE NETWORK. But, naturally, users sometimes lose, forget or incorrectly type passwords (it is very rare that the system itself is at fault here). If you are having a problem you can email helpdesk@ethamcollege.vic.edu.au us or take a look at a few of the solutions to common errors listed below:

Computer Generated Passwords:

Incorrect Password
(forgotten, lost, etc.)

Many people begin with a series of numbers and letters as their passwords that can cause confusion.  While you can change this after logging on for the first time, this is not much help if you are having difficulty logging on initially!
  • The first problem is that the password is Case Sensitive.  You must write capitals and lower case letters as appropriate.
  • Because the capital letter "i", lower case "L" and the number one "1" look similar you may need to interchange these characters.  This is the same for the number zero "0" and upper case letter "O"

N.B. The above password issue has been dealt with by using a more simplified system. Only people who still have an original password and have not changed it will be affected by the above problem.

  • The user identification for parents often looks as follows "par_1234".  The identification is all lower case and the "_" character is created by pressing and holding the "shift" key and typing the minus character beside the "0" (zero) on your keyboard.
  • If you are sure that you know your password and it is not working check that Caps Lock is not on, and if your password contains numbers and you use the Keypad check that the Number Lock is on.

Changing Your Password

Once you have logged on successfully, please go to the "change password" link in the far left hand menu of the reports area to change your password to something meaningful to you, but that others are unlikely to guess.

Please Note: You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your password, and are fully responsible for all activities that occur under your password. Immediately notify the College of any unauthorised use of your password or any other breach of security.

Please ensure that you log off at the end of each session

A common question...What is the Internal Identification?

This is the Username.

Difficulties accessing reports
We have noticed that some users are logging onto the KNOWLEDGE NETWORK and forgetting to LOG OFF.  This issue causes you to have difficulties when going into the system a second time as it sees you as still being logged on and keeps taking you to the home page instead of the reporting area.

This issue is due to your computer remembering sites that you visit in order to make download quicker.  This "feature" of Internet Explorer is called "caching".  Unfortunately, this problem also extends to your Internet Service provider where the provider may cache certain well used sites to save download costs.

The answer to this problem lies in two areas.  Firstly it is best to use Internet Explorer version 6, and have your browser set to always check for new pages. You can do this by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Under the heading Temporary Internet Files click on the "Settings..." button
  4. In the Settings window select the dot beside "Every visit to the page"

Additionally, you will need to delete any temporary internet pages that currently exist on your computer by following the steps below:

  1. Go to the Tools menu in Internet Explorer
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Under the heading Temporary Internet Files click on the "Delete files..." button
  4. You will be asked to confirm (it is not necessary to delete offline content so leave the tick box empty) Click on OK

If you have difficulties making these changes then please call the College on 9437 1421.

Further options are more technical in nature, so please call the College for further information or email helpdesk@ethamcollege.vic.edu.au for assistance.
