Music Instrumental Awards
Description
Music Instrumental Awards will be offered to students for Years 5-8 in 2010, tenable for one year and covering College instrumental tuition fees for one instrument.
Students in Years 4-7 in 2009 will be eligible to apply for the following year.
Criteria
Good school achievement and personal record, and excellent audition in a chosen instrument.

ECCA Achievement Awards
Description
Eltham College Community Association (ECCA), in collaboration with ELTHAM College of Education, offers Achievement Awards to students in recognition of excellence in a chosen discipline while at ELTHAM. The awards are open to all students enrolled at ELTHAM and are aimed at assisting students to further develop their expertise and talents.
Criteria
- Individual or team representation in a chosen discipline (sport, music, IT, performance, drama, academic) at state and/or national level while the student is enrolled at ELTHAM
- In any given discipline, eligibility is restricted to one award for state and/or one award for national representation within one academic year
- In addition to an award certificate, recipients of the award are eligible to receive $250 for State representation; $500 for national representation
- To be eligible for an award for national representation at an international event scheduled for after the student is no longer enrolled at ELTHAM, the student must have been selected while still enrolled at ELTHAM, and not subsequently enrolled in another school
- Teams are eligible for an award of $250 per team member, up to a maximum of $1000 per team

Christopher Barnes Award
Description
Christopher Barnes was a talented ELTHAM College student who died in tragic circumstances in 1990. Christopher's artistic talent extended across music and the visual arts. He was innovative and not afraid to challenge artistic convention. To celebrate Christophers life, and to further allow his artistic achievements to inspire future students at the College, the Barnes family provided this scholarship to be awarded to a senior years creative arts student at ELTHAM.
The scholarship is worth $3000.
Criteria
- Willingness to experiment and take risks in the expression of ideas
- Demonstration of aesthetic awareness and creativity across the creative arts
- A Senior School student currently enrolled at the College
Selection
- Interview and performance/folio presentation before a selection panel consisting of a member of the College Executive and at least two teachers/practitioners in the creative arts
- The performance/folio presentation should cover a range of creative arts areas or styles, ideally ranging across both music and the visual arts
- The panel will review each folio/performance and students will be invited to discuss their folio/performance with the selection panel
Guidelines
Students are required to prepare a selection of works from the following for the interview/audition:
- A musical performance piece
- A folio of art work in any medium or a range of media (2D or 3D, including photography, video, multimedia, painting, drawing, sculpture)
Preparation
Students may discuss their program with, and receive advice from, any member of the music or visual arts teams prior to the selection interview.
Registration
- Email applications to the Enrolment Officer at ELTHAM College of Education
- Include a 250 word statement outlining why you should be considered for the award
- Do not include any examples of folio work with your application, this should instead be brought to the selection interview
- Selection interviews will be held late May 2009
Closing date
Applications close 8 May 2009.
Notification
The recipient of the award will be notified early Term 3, followed by an announcement to the College community. The talents of the award winner will be celebrated and showcased at the Senior School Celebration Evening.

Alain D. Philips Language Scholarship
Description
Alain Phillips came to ELTHAM as its first Vice Principal after a distinguished career at The King's School, Parramatta, NSW. Alain occupied the position of Vice Principal between 1978 and 1993.
Alain was a gentleman whose scholarship and humour helped develop the character of ELTHAM in its formative years. He was an ardent supporter of languages and the Arts and brought his love of languages to his classroom teaching. Alain held a steadfast belief that self-discipline was an important ingredient in the development of a young person and he wanted the totality of the College experience to enhance that development.
The College will make available the Alan D Phillips Scholarship on an annual basis in order to:
- Recognise outstanding achievement by an individual College student in the study of a Language Other Than English (LOTE)
- Encourage further exploration of Chinese (Mandarin), French, Indonesian or Spanish
The scholarship is designed to support a LOTE student to travel and/or study overseas. It comprises a $5000 scholarship towards expenses in visiting and/or studying in an overseas country to further develop the applicants LOTE skills and experiences.
Criteria
To be eligible for a scholarship you must be a Year 10-12 student studying a LOTE at ELTHAM College of Education in the year of intended travel.
Selection
Selection is based on academic merit and takes into account:
- College record
- LOTE teacher reference
- Awards
- Activities
- Panel interview
In looking at the applicants, the Selection Committee will give consideration to Alain Phillips' belief in self-discipline and will assess the applicants commitment to and level of self-direction and self management.
Important Information
Scholarship decisions are made on the basis of information available at the time of selection. In determining the award of a scholarship, the Selection Committee will:
- refer to information as it is recorded on the scholarship application
- distinguish between applicants of equal academic merit through the use of further information on their academic record provided or through other material provided in the scholarship application
All scholarship offers are conditional upon enrolment at ELTHAM College of Education. The College reserves the right not to award the scholarship. The scholarship cannot be deferred

- Submit an application
- Submit a reference from your LOTE teacher
- Undergo an interview
- Satisfy the eligibility criteria
Applications must be lodged by the published closing date in the year of intended travel.
