Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for joining us as we come together to celebrate the end of another remarkable year at ELTHAM College. Standing here now, it’s impossible not to think back to the very beginning of the year, when I spoke about the power of belonging and the importance of being part of One Team. Today, as I look around at our students, staff, families, and community members, I can recall just how deeply those values have been lived and embodied over the past months.
This year has been defined by moments of connection—large and small—that have strengthened our community. You have supported one another through challenges, celebrated each other’s successes, and continued building a culture where every individual feels valued. You might have been part of an uplifting House Music performance, run your heart out at Cross-country, thrown with all your might at Athletics Carnival, Swum with gusto during House Swimming, or played a vital team role for one of our many school sports teams. Maybe you took your first steps on stage as part of either the Drowsy Chaperone or the wonderful production of the Wizard of Oz, or possibly you performed with others in one of our many musical performances and soirees. You might have welcomed others into one of our many Co-Curricular clubs, or just helped a mate when they needed it.
Our founders imagined a school where hearts and minds could grow together; your efforts this year have honoured that vision and carried it forward with purpose and pride.
I want to congratulate our students for the way you have contributed to this inclusive culture. You welcomed new faces, worked collaboratively, and showed kindness in countless ways—often beyond the view of teachers or parents, but always deeply felt by those around you. You demonstrated that belonging is not just something we feel—it is something we build.
To our staff: thank you for your unwavering commitment to guiding, supporting, and nurturing every learner in your care. You model respect, empathy, and integrity daily, and those qualities ripple outward, shaping the tone of our entire school.
And to our parents and families: your engagement, encouragement, and partnership are indispensable. You help sustain the warmth, generosity, and collective spirit that make ELTHAM College feel like a true community.
Of course, we also know that maintaining a strong sense of belonging is not always easy. Sometimes, it is tested—by careless words, unkind actions, or the quiet spread of gossip and rumour. When these moments arise, our response matters. We must remember that every one of us is human, capable of making mistakes, and equally capable of learning from them. Understanding, forgiveness, and the belief in each person’s ability to grow are central to who we are as a community.
At the same time, culture is upheld by courage: the courage to speak up when something isn’t right, to challenge behaviour that undermines others, and to protect the culture we have worked so hard to create. When we do this—respectfully, constructively, and with compassion—we strengthen our unity. We show that our commitment to community is more than words; it is action.
This year, you have shown that One Team is not merely an ideal but a lived reality: a community where differences are celebrated, contributions are valued, and relationships are built on respect. You have demonstrated that belonging is both a privilege and a responsibility—and that our collective strength remains far greater than the sum of our individual efforts.
As we conclude the year, it feels entirely appropriate that we finish not just with the formality of Flagpole, but also with a community event—an opportunity to come together once more, to celebrate what we have achieved, and to enjoy the simple pleasure of being part of something larger than ourselves. Events like this afternoon’s remind us why we do what we do: because community matters. Because belonging matters. Because each of us plays a role in shaping the culture of ELTHAM College.
One person who has done much to help shape our Culture is Mr Jim Grant our outgoing chair of the ELTHAM College Board– many of you will have enjoyed hearing him speak, or have been gently encouraged by his ability to recognise achievement with generosity. I know no greater advocate for the College, or supporter of its people, and I’d like us all to acknowledge his commitment to this community as both a previous parent and long-standing Board member – on behalf of us all- thank you Jim.
Finally, I’d like to thank all of you for your contributions, your kindness, your resilience, and your commitment to one another. I could not be more proud of what we have accomplished together, nor more hopeful for what lies ahead.
I wish you all a wonderful and restorative break, and I look forward to seeing you in the new year as we continue to grow—together—as One Team.
Thank you.
The final part of this assembly is the lowering of the flags. We do this to symbolise the end of the school year, just as we raise them at the start of each year at our commencement Flagpole ceremony.
So please, if you able, stand as we join together to sing the College song, as our Captains lower the flags on the 2025 school year.

One year on from our 50th anniversary celebrations, we are proud to reveal a very special project that has been quietly taking shape behind the scenes. A true labour of love, Growing Hearts and Minds: The Daring Adventure is a documentary that captures the story, spirit and community of ELTHAM College.
Created to mark this significant milestone, the documentary showcases the foundational essence of the College and the spirit of those who built ELTHAM from the ground up. It reflects on our journey over the past five decades, from early beginnings shaped by bold ideas and shared purpose to the vibrant, values-driven learning community we are today.
Through interviews, archival material and contemporary reflections, the film honours the people, relationships and vision that have defined ELTHAM across generations. Featuring voices from past and present staff, students, parents and alumni, the documentary offers both personal and collective perspectives on what makes ELTHAM a community grounded in belonging, curiosity and courage. Together, these stories reveal a deep continuity between ELTHAM’s origins and the lived experience of the College today.
We warmly invite families to watch the documentary and join us in reflecting on 50 years of learning, relationships and shared purpose, along with the enduring values that will continue to guide ELTHAM into the future. While we are pleased to make the documentary available to families now, we also look forward to bringing our community together for shared screenings in 2026.
A heartfelt thank you to all our families who joined us for our End of Year Celebration. It was a joy to see our community come together, and your enthusiasm and presence helped make the event such a huge success.
I would also like to extend my deepest thanks to our wonderful ECCA volunteers, whose generosity, energy and commitment played a vital role in bringing the day to life. We are so grateful for the time you give so freely to support the College.
To our incredible staff team, thank you for your tireless efforts — both behind the scenes and on the day. Your willingness to pitch in, support one another and create a welcoming experience for families reflects the very best of who we are at ELTHAM.
And finally, thank you to the MECA team, who worked so passionately to design and deliver a brand-new addition to our event calendar. It was a privilege to create something that truly celebrates the spirit of our amazing community, and we look forward to building on this success in future years.
With warm appreciation,

ELTHAM College proudly acknowledges the release of VCE and ATAR results for our Year 12 2025 cohort, celebrating the dedication, perseverance and personal growth of our graduating students.
This year’s results reflect the diverse strengths of the cohort and the many pathways our students are now pursuing. At ELTHAM, success is understood as more than a single outcome; it is grounded in curiosity, courage, resilience and a sense of purpose. We are proud of the way our students have approached their learning and contributed to College life throughout their Senior School journey.
This year, ELTHAM College recorded a provisional Median Study Score of 32, reflecting the steady commitment to learning shown across the cohort. We also congratulate the 14 Year 12 students who achieved an ATAR of 90 and above — an accomplishment that highlights both individual dedication and the depth of academic strength within the Class of 2025.
We are pleased to recognise two of our Year 12 students whose achievements reflect both academic excellence and the values at the heart of the College.
College Dux — Molly Brennin (ATAR 98.6)
Molly is an exceptional all-rounder whose outstanding academic result reflects years of dedication, consistency and intellectual curiosity. A College Captain in 2025, she has been deeply involved in College life and is widely recognised as a caring, kind and thoughtful member of our community. Molly approached her learning with balance and purpose, demonstrating strong leadership, generosity of spirit and a genuine commitment to those around her. Her achievement is a testament not only to her personal effort but also to the values she embodied throughout her entire time at the College.
International High Achiever — Peng Cookie (ATAR 94.8)
Cookie was Internationalism Captain in 2025 and an exceptional student whose achievements span both academic and co-curricular life. Alongside her strong academic results, she demonstrates outstanding musical talent and a deep commitment to cultural leadership within the College community. Cookie’s success reflects not only her personal dedication and adaptability but also the strength of ELTHAM College’s International Student program, which supports students to thrive academically, creatively and socially through dedicated guidance and care.
We also congratulate our Year 11 students who completed Unit 3/4 subjects this year and achieved exceptional outcomes. Twenty-five per cent of all 3/4 study scores were 40 and above, which is a remarkable achievement.
Notably, Alex Dodd achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Physical Education, and Caelan Robertson achieved a perfect study score of 50 in Hospitality — an outstanding reflection of their hard work, passion and determination in these specialised subjects. Both Alex and Caelan are members of our 2026 student leadership team, and we are incredibly proud of the dedication they bring to their studies and to College life. Their achievements highlight the strength of our teaching programs, and the rich opportunities students have to extend their learning ahead of Year 12.
Together, Molly, Cookie, Alex and Caelan represent the breadth of opportunity at ELTHAM College — academic excellence, leadership, creativity and belonging — and the many ways students are supported to flourish as individuals.
“Our graduates leave ELTHAM with much more than academic results. They leave with confidence, compassion and a sense of responsibility, shaped within a community that supports diverse pathways and helps every student thrive,” said Principal and CEO, Richard Lisle.
We thank our Senior School teachers and support staff for their care, expertise and guidance, and our families for their ongoing partnership and support. Most importantly, we congratulate the Class of 2025 and wish each graduate every success as they begin the next chapter of their journey.

Arriving in Mortlake, we were equal parts excited and daunted by the fact that a 365-kilometre bike ride lay ahead of us. Either way, we were ready for the challenge.
Day 1 eased us into the journey with a 62km ride featuring minimal incline.
Day 2 saw us complete a 67km loop through scenic Port Fairy, where we stopped for photos at the famous lighthouse before enjoying a relaxed afternoon kicking the footy and playing cricket.
On Day 3, we packed up camp and rode along the coast to the picturesque Port Campbell. This was an 88km day filled with stunning scenery and plenty of hills. With weary legs by the end of the ride, we headed out for dinner to refuel and prepare for the next day, the big 100km challenge.
On Day 4, Sim woke us at 5:45am and we packed a serious amount of snacks in preparation. After some solid climbs, riders reached the first rest stop at 28km, where they could choose to complete a 50km ride or take on the full 100km. Those who opted for 50km were rewarded with 22km of downhill, which was very tempting, while those who pushed on faced more hills, challenging weather and strong winds.
Completing the 100km ride came with an incredible reward, a stop for what is famously known as the best ice cream in Victoria in Timboon. That ice cream helped power us through the final 24km and before we knew it, we had ridden 100km in a single day, a massive achievement we were all proud of.
Day 5 was a more relaxed 52km ride into Camperdown. At the finish line, our ELTHAM team crossed together, officially completing the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
After an unforgettable week away, we already can’t wait for the 2026 GVBR.

Over the past fortnight, our school community has come together for a school-wide toiletries drive in support of Big Group Hug. Our Junior School students drew on their learning from the Friendology program to design and paint personalised bags, each one carrying a message of kindness, care and encouragement.
In a wonderful example of cross-age collaboration, Senior School student leaders then joined the juniors to help fill each bag with the generous toiletries donated by families. Together, they brought these messages of kindness to life, creating meaningful care packs that will soon be gifted to children in need.
These two afternoons were a highlight of the term — filled with connection, teamwork and purposeful learning that truly reflected our shared values as a community.
A heartfelt thank you to all families for your generosity and support. Your contributions have helped our students make a genuine and lasting difference in the lives of others.

Celebrating Success at the 2025 Lyrebird Youth Awards
Following the announcement of the 2025 Lyrebird Youth Award nominations early in Term 4, we are delighted to share the wonderful news from the awards ceremony, held on Sunday 7 December at Bunjil Place Theatre in Narre Warren.
ELTHAM College was proudly represented on the night, with several outstanding achievements recognised across our productions. We are especially pleased to congratulate Caelan Robertson, who received two awards, and John Clayton, whose contribution was also formally acknowledged. We also celebrate the College being recognised with a Judges’ Award for creative excellence in set design.
Award recipients from ELTHAM College include:
The Drowsy Chaperone
(Youth Musical under $40K)
Caelan’s dual wins are a remarkable achievement and a testament to his talent, dedication and versatility as a performer. John’s award recognises the vital role sound design plays in bringing a production to life, while the Judges’ Award for creative set design highlights the imagination, craftsmanship and collaborative thinking behind The Drowsy Chaperone.
The Lyrebird Youth Awards celebrate excellence in youth theatre across Melbourne’s outer-eastern region, recognising not only individual performance but also teamwork, creativity and collective effort. These awards build on an already impressive result for ELTHAM, with 22 nominations across three productions: The Drowsy Chaperone, The Music Man and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
Every ELTHAM production is a true team effort, and we are incredibly proud of all students involved: on stage, in the band, backstage and across production roles. Our sincere thanks also go to the dedicated staff who guided and supported these performances, including Stewart, Halley, Nicole, John, Michelle, Aaron, Dylan and the wider creative team.

ELTHAM College is committed to providing a safe environment for our young people, free from harm and abuse. As such we adhere to the Victorian Child Safe Standards (the Standards) in all aspects of our organisation. The Standards provide clarity and practical steps to help keep children and young people safe.
One way to keep children and young people safe is to ensure all people working with them have a Working With Children Check. The aim of the check is to assist in protecting children from sexual and physical harm by ensuring that people who work with, or care for, them are subject to a screening process.
If you, as a parent or guardian, are employing a tutor, babysitter or instrumental teacher or any other person over the age of 18 to supervise or work with your child outside of school we would highly recommend that they have a WWCC. If you have accessed this service from a registered provider, it is their legal responsibility to ensure all their employees have one. However, it is your right to clarify that the person you have working with your child has a valid, current, Working With Children Check.
There are two types of checks, a volunteer check and an employee check. Although the assessment process is the same, if someone is being paid to work with a child then they must apply for an employee check rather than a volunteer check. A volunteer might be a coach of a sporting team or scout leader versus an employee might be a tutor, babysitter or instrumental teacher where there is payment for services. The employee check covers both volunteer and paid work.
More information regarding WWCC can be found at https://www.vic.gov.au/working-with-children-check.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to myself or one of the Child Safe Officers at ELTHAM College.

Supporting Students Through Upcoming Social Media Changes
As many families will be aware, the Australian Government’s new regulations affecting access to certain social media applications for young people aged 16 and under will come into effect tomorrow. While this is a significant national shift, our purpose in sharing this update is not to provide a policy directive, but to acknowledge the change and continue our ongoing engagement with families around digital wellbeing.
Throughout 2025, students across both our Junior and Senior Schools have been exploring topics related to social media use, digital citizenship and online responsibility as part of classroom learning and our whole-school wellbeing programs. These conversations have helped students build awareness, reflect on their online habits and consider how to navigate digital spaces safely and positively. This work will continue into 2026.
The College has reviewed the new government regulations and will continue to monitor any changes closely. We will share further clarification with families in the new year regarding any implications for school settings and the use of digital devices.
We understand that these changes may raise questions or prompt discussions at home. We encourage you to explore resources from the eSafety Commissioner. Their parent guides, conversation starters and practical tools are designed to help young people use technology safely, manage online risks and develop healthy digital habits. These resources can be especially helpful when navigating questions or concerns at home.

Declan, who is part of the 2025 Year 7 Sport and Emerging Athlete Programs, has been racing exceptionally well at both state and national level this season. His recent results over the past month include being crowned Under 15 Victorian State Champion in the scratch race, along with a silver medal in the Victorian State Omnium.
Unfortunately, Declan was brought down in a high-speed crash at the National Omnium in Perth and finished fifth overall. While this wasn’t the podium result he had hoped for, we are incredibly proud of his resilience, determination and effort.
Declan’s upcoming competitions include the third round of the National Track Series in Adelaide in January, the Victorian State Championships in February, and the Track National Championships in Brisbane in March, where he will compete as part of the Victorian State Team.
We wish Declan all the very best for his upcoming races.
