Leadership Day is all about helping us discover that leadership isn’t just for people with a badge — it’s something we all have inside us. Through fun challenges, reflection activities, and team-based games, we explored what it means to be a leader and how to work together to solve problems. Here’s what some of us had to say about the day:
To start the day, we completed a worksheet and had a discussion in Amplify, a building in the Senior School where the older students study. One of the activities was a fun brain challenge where we had to guess how many body parts have only three letters. It really made us think outside the box — and we were proud to beat last year’s record!
We also completed a reflection task called The Leader in Us, where we thought about our strengths and weaknesses. We learnt that leadership isn’t about being the loudest person in the room — it’s about knowing yourself and understanding how to bring out the best in others.
After about 20–25 minutes inside, we headed out for a fun and competitive game in our house groups. We had to either steal plastic cups from other teams or collect them from the middle to build the tallest tower. It was fast-paced and chaotic — in the best way! The goal was to have the highest stack by the end, and we had to communicate and work together if we wanted to succeed.
Then came the best part: the treasure hunt, also known as the “Amazing Race”. We started with a single clue and had to race around the Junior School, finding ELTHAM College staff to get the next one. The tricky part was that the teachers move around a lot, so the real challenge was actually finding them! Some teams argued and got stuck, while others who worked well together made it to the end.
A tip for next year’s Year 6 students: you’ll only get through the hunt if you work together. Think outside the box — because Eleni doesn’t make it easy! And don’t eat too many sausages… someone ate eight.
Earlier in the day, we also met Lesley Moulin, Head of Senior School, who gave us a quick tour of the senior study rooms. Penny van Gelderen, Year 7 Coordinator, gave a presentation about what to expect in Year 7, and Richard Lisle, our Principal and CEO, gave a short speech with helpful tips on what it means to be a leader.
We finished the day with a barbecue, which everyone was excited for. It was the perfect way to wrap up Leadership Day — a day that turned out to be both fun and meaningful.
A huge thank you to Eleni Goulas, Director of ELC and Junior School, for planning such an awesome day, challenging us, and always believing in us — and thank you to Laura Lasco, Year 4–6 Team Leader, Colleen Taranto from Student Services, Sandra Vander Pal, Deputy Director – Junior School, and all the teachers who support and believe in us every step of the way.
Leadership Day reminded us that we are now the leaders of the Junior School, and it’s our job to step up and be great role models for the younger students.
