Learning through purposeful action
At ELTHAM College, Service Learning is a vital part of how students connect their learning to the world around them. Through authentic, community-based experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of their role as active and responsible citizens.
Our Service Learning program brings together investigation, meaningful engagement and reflection, enabling students to build empathy, strengthen their sense of purpose and develop the skills needed to make a positive impact—locally and globally.
Grounded in the College’s values, Service Learning at ELTHAM is not an add-on; it is an integrated, transformative learning experience that grows with each student across their years at the College.
A Developmental Journey
Service Learning at ELTHAM is designed to evolve with students as they progress through the College, moving from shared experiences to increasingly independent and student-led initiatives.
Students engage with a range of focus areas, including:
Families and local community
Animal welfare
Older populations
Indigenous knowledges and communities
Child welfare
Sustainability and climate action
Global service and social justice
Across each stage of learning, students are supported to build knowledge, form connections and contribute meaningfully in ways that are age-appropriate and impactful.
Our Flagship Partner - Big Group Hug
ELTHAM College has proudly supported Big Group Hug since 2016, engaging students in meaningful, hands-on service that responds directly to community need. Through initiatives such as collecting and donating essential items, assembling care packages, and participating in awareness and fundraising activities, students contribute to providing clothing, equipment and resources for vulnerable children and families. This partnership reflects the College’s commitment to service learning, enabling students to develop empathy, take action and see the tangible impact of their contribution within the wider community.

House Fundraising
The ELTHAM College House system furthers each students’ sense of belonging and connection with school life. Each House, through a student-led process, has chosen an organisation their Service Learning work will support.
Staff also join Houses, fostering another avenue for positive connections between students, staff and the Service Learning Program.
