Reflections as an MTC Youth Ambassador 

Over the past seven months, I’ve had the privilege of being a Melbourne Theatre Company (MTC) Youth Ambassador. As the year draws to a close, I’ve been reflecting on what an incredible experience it’s been. 

I was nominated by my drama teacher, Ms Suzie Thomas, in Term 1, and after completing my application, I was thrilled to learn that I’d been accepted into the program. The Youth Ambassadors are a group of around 15 Year 11 students from across Victoria who share a passion for theatre in all its forms. Not only acting, but also writing, directing, design and every element that brings a show together into a polished final production. 

Each month, we meet to see an MTC play (free of charge!) and have the opportunity to speak with industry professionals about their creative journeys. Needless to say, it’s been an amazing experience. I’ve had the chance to see some truly inspiring plays by incredibly talented people — my personal favourites so far being Kimberly Akimbo and Destiny — and connect with like-minded students who love theatre as much as I do. 

Being part of this program has made a career in the arts feel less like a dream from a movie and more like a real, achievable path. Hearing the unconventional and relatable stories of MTC cast and crew members has shown me the many different ways to build a creative career. 

As a VCE Theatre Studies and Drama student, I’ve found the program especially rewarding. Every show and every person I’ve met has offered insight into a new aspect of the theatre-making process. 

If you have even the slightest interest in theatre, I can’t recommend the Melbourne Theatre Company enough. Make the trip to Southbank and experience a live performance - it’s unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

The ELTHAM College community was out in force at this year’s Run for the Firies, proudly supporting our local Kangaroo Ground and Research Fire Brigades. 

Our College team exceeded its registration target, with 52 runners taking part and many parents joining to cheer from the sidelines. It was a fantastic morning that showcased true community spirit, teamwork and support for an important local cause, with ELTHAM College colours and tops visible everywhere. 

Across all distances, the ELTHAM College team delivered an outstanding team performance. From sprint finishes in the 4km to endurance efforts in the Half Marathon, the event showcased the College’s teamwork, resilience and community pride.  

Events like this highlight the strength of our College community and the shared values that connect us beyond the classroom. A sincere thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the day so memorable—especially Patrick Knight, Year 11 Sport Leader; Nick Milne, Year 11 Coordinator; Sean van Oosterwijck, Senior Sports & PE Teacher; and the staff from MECA and Finance, who staffed the marquee and supported the College spirit through their presence. 

🏃‍♂️ 6km Run 

ELTHAM College had an exceptional showing in the 6km event, with Patrick Knight leading the team and taking 1st place overall and in his age category. The top finishers demonstrated impressive pace and teamwork throughout. 

• Patrick Knight – 1st overall (21:46 finish time) and 1st in his age category 
• Rory Bradshaw – 4th overall and 2nd in his age category 
• Nick Milne – 5th overall 
• Sean Van Oosterwijck – 6th overall 
• Lisa Miraglia - first in her age category and 19th overall  

Ned Leeson, Brent Wallace, Andrew Knight, James Grima and Thomas Owen-Jones also placed very strongly within the top 20 and their age categories.  

 4km Run 

ELTHAM made their presence known in the 4km run, showing determination and pace across all age categories. 

• Joshua Stasinowsky –  6th in his age category & 12th overall 
• Darren Sasinowsky – 2nd in his age category & 9th overall 
• Zara Stasinowsky – 5th in her age category & 14th overall 
• Alice Ward - 2nd in her age category & 20th overall  

The Stasinowsky family effort stood out, with three family members finishing in the top 10. 

4km Walk 

In the walking event, Julie Knight and Janelle Turner proudly represented ELTHAM College, finishing 3rd and 4th in their age category and 8th and 10th overall - a testament to their steady pace and strong College spirit. 

Half Marathon 

In the most demanding event of the day, Niall McDonagh flew the ELTHAM flag in the Half Marathon, completing the 21.1km course with an impressive time of 1:37:19, finishing 15th overall and 10th in his age category. 

Our parent community and staff stepped back into the neon era on Saturday 18 October, for ECCA's Neon Nights 80’s Trivia Challenge & Fundraiser at Swiper’s Gully Training Restaurant. The night was a vibrant celebration of retro knowledge, delicious food, and community spirit - all in support of Big Group Hug.

Guests enjoyed generous canapés and drinks, tested their 80’s trivia skills, and got competitive in silent auction, raffle and buy-in games. The atmosphere was electric, with many coming dressed in their best 80’s classics. Prizes added extra excitement for those with the boldest retro outfits!

The evening successfully combined fun and fundraising, with each ticket including a contribution to student service learning, directly benefiting Big Group Hug.

It was a fantastic night of laughter, nostalgia, and community support—a perfect reminder of what we can achieve when we come together for a good cause.

The ELTHAM College community came together today to celebrate World Teachers’ Day, acknowledging the dedication and care of all staff who contribute to the learning journey of our students. 

To mark the occasion, staff were invited to enjoy a well-deserved BBQ lunch by the 2026 College Captain team - a small gesture of thanks for their ongoing commitment, creativity and care. 

From classrooms and studios to offices and outdoor spaces, every member of staff plays an important role in shaping meaningful experiences and helping students thrive. Together, they create the rich and supportive environment that makes ELTHAM such a special place to learn and grow. 

Happy World Teachers’ Day to all our educators and support staff who make ELTHAM the inspiring community it is. 

We’re proud to share that Mason, one of ELTHAM College’s Junior School Captains, has been recognised by the Honourable Vicki Ward MP, Member for Eltham, with the David McKenzie Award - an honour that celebrates students who are kind, care deeply about social justice, and actively engage with their learning.

The award reflects the legacy of David McKenzie, former Mayor and Member of Parliament, whose leadership was defined by integrity, community service, and a commitment to equity.

As a Junior School Captain, Mason embodies these same qualities every day - showing compassion for others, contributing meaningfully to College life, and championing inclusive, community-minded initiatives. This recognition acknowledges not only Mason’s personal character, but also the positive impact he has on his peers and the wider community.

On behalf of ELTHAM College, we congratulate Mason on this well-deserved achievement and thank the Hon. Vicki Ward MP for recognising the next generation of thoughtful, engaged citizens.

6L have been working alongside RMIT mathematics lecturers Marj Horne and Dr Rebecca Seah to deepen their understanding of mathematical reasoning. Together, we have explored how the equals sign represents balance rather than simply a result, leading us to think algebraically and reason symbolically.  

Students have investigated these ideas through open-ended games and problem-solving tasks, making connections between patterns, relationships, and equations. Recently, we have also been learning to use Singaporean Ribbon Diagrams to represent and solve worded problems—an approach that encourages visual thinking and flexible strategies.

Year 4-6 Team Leader 

As part of the Multimedia program, our Year 5/6 students recently took part in an exciting workshop that brought the world of news production to life. Using green screen technology, students created their own news segments while developing key skills in news literacy, reporting, and interviewing.

Working in small groups, students planned, scripted and presented their own news programs. They explored the differences between primary and secondary sources, considered the value of expert opinions and reflected on the ethical responsibilities of journalists. Along the way, they gained hands-on experience with the technology behind digital backgrounds and discovered how green screens are used in professional media environments.

Their final news segments were recorded and edited by staff from the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and will be available for future viewing.

In addition to the workshop, all Year 5/6 students visited ACMI’s permanent exhibition, The Story of the Moving Image. This interactive experience took them on a journey through the history and future of digital storytelling, deepening their understanding of how moving images shape our world.

It was a memorable and inspiring experience that sparked curiosity, creativity and critical thinking in our budding media makers. A big thank you to the Year 5/6 staff for their support on the day and for supporting this fantastic learning opportunity!

Last weekend, the Clarke Theatre was transformed into the magical Land of Oz as our Junior Production of The Wizard of Oz took to the stage. Featuring students from Year 5 through to Year 9, the production played to sold-out audiences and showcased the incredible depth of talent within our performing arts program. 

This truly student-led production brought together 68 students from Year 5 to Year 12, who took the lead both on stage and behind the scenes. From the short films that brought the Cyclone and the Wizard’s Chamber to life, to imaginative costume and set design, puppet creation, backstage coordination and technical operations in the bio box — every element reflected creativity, teamwork and initiative. 

For some students, this was a courageous first step onto the stage; for others, a proud and poignant farewell to their Junior Production years. Supported by our dedicated teachers and audiovisual staff, the performance embodied our College value of “One Team” in action. 

Congratulations to all involved on a truly memorable celebration of collaboration, creativity and courage.

We are thrilled to congratulate Gita Salari (Year 9) for winning the Best Individual Performer award at this year’s OutLoud Poetry Slam, held on Monday 1 September.  

Schools from across Melbourne gathered at The Wheeler Centre at the State Library for a full day celebrating the power of spoken word, with Year 7–9 students performing their original poems on stage. 

ELTHAM College entered three teams, all of whom performed exceptionally well: 

• Year 7: Adut, Bianca, Siena, Anousha, Rosalie 
• Year 8: Isobel, Silvie, Christina, Josephine, Aria 
• Year 9: Gita 

Gita impressed the judges in the morning heats and advanced to the afternoon finals, where she delivered her poem with remarkable passion, precision and confidence. The event organisers later shared that Gita “killed it” — a testament to her talent and stage presence. 

We are incredibly proud of all our ELTHAM College participants who embraced the challenge of writing and performing their own poetry before an audience of peers, teachers, and parents. Their creativity, courage and authenticity shone brightly throughout the event.

Mark Smith, acclaimed author of both YA and adult fiction, drew inspiration for his work from the stunning coastline around his hometown of Anglesea. Last week, Mark brought his passion for storytelling to ELTHAM College, providing enriching experiences for students, staff and even parents. 

During his residency, Mark worked across multiple year levels, guiding students through creative writing sessions that culminated in crafted pieces. Based in the library, he was readily available for conversations and questions, making meaningful connections throughout the week. 

Highlights included a Year 7 creative writing workshop in our nature reserve, where students explored sensory details to bring their stories to life. Mark also worked with VCE Literature students, our co-curricular writing group, and the parent book club, A Novel Bunch. The week concluded with a visit to the Year 9 city campus, where students explored Melbourne laneways to observe details and develop characters. 

It was an incredible week filled with authentic, hands-on learning experiences that left a lasting impression on the whole ELTHAM community.

This term, our Year 7 Chinese classes explored the rich traditions of the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important festivals in China. Students learned about the history of the festival and the famous legend of Chang’e, the Moon Goddess, gaining insight into its cultural significance. 

We also focused on the language used during the festival, learning common phrases to wish family and friends a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival. As part of our celebration, students created their own festival cards, sharing warm wishes and practicing their language skills.

The festival is a special time in Chinese culture, symbolizing family reunion and togetherness. By engaging in activities like the Kahoot quiz and card-making, students not only had fun but also developed collaboration, creativity and cultural understanding. These activities encourage students to appreciate diversity, respect different traditions and strengthen connections within our school community. 

It was wonderful to see students learning, celebrating and contributing to a more inclusive and culturally aware community, while enjoying creative and collaborative experiences.

LOTE Coordinator/Chinese Teacher 

They began by paddling along the Yarra River from Jumping Creek Reserve to Warrandyte, before taking on a more technical canoe journey from Homestead Road to Wittons Reserve, developing teamwork, resilience and navigation skills along the way.

Students also ventured underground to explore the Britannia Creek Cave system, crawling through narrow passages and discovering fascinating rock formations. Later, they tested their climbing skills at Hardrock Climbing Gym in Nunawading, learning about technique, trust and belaying safety.

These experiences have built confidence, strengthened connections and deepened students’ appreciation for the natural environment. To conclude the elective, students will undertake a Wilderness-themed Level 2 First Aid course on 12 November, preparing them for their ultimate challenge — an eight-day hike across Victoria’s breathtaking Alpine National Park.

Outdoor Education  

This term, the Amplify Yourself lunchtime club has continued to thrive as a vibrant hub for student creativity, innovation and hands-on learning. Through the Amplify Makerspace program, students have had the opportunity to explore their passions and bring their ideas to life in exciting and meaningful ways. 

With the support of staff and access to a wide range of tools and technologies, students have taken ownership of their learning, pursuing projects that reflect their interests and pushing the boundaries of what they thought possible. From building a track circuit for a remote control 4WD vehicle to constructing a fully functional drone, students have embraced ambitious challenges with enthusiasm and ingenuity. 

Other projects have included designing and fabricating custom board and puzzle games, as well as modifying remote control cars to showcase individual styles and engineering flair. Many students followed the full design process—brainstorming, prototyping, refining and producing final products—while gaining hands-on experience with tools like laser cutters and 3D printers. A standout example is Year 8 student Oden Samara, who dedicated many weeks at school and home to create his own fully programmable remote control car; a fantastic demonstration of what can be achieved when passion meets persistence. 

More than just a club, Amplify Yourself has become a launchpad for innovation. I’m incredibly proud of the creativity and collaboration on display and look forward to seeing how students continue to use the space to explore, invent and create.

Regional Athletics Championships 2025 

Congratulations to Jacob Guyett (100m and Triple Jump), Natasha Davies (800m), Jake Jordan (Triple Jump), Thomas Bell (Triple Jump) and Sophia Guyett (Triple Jump) who all represented ELTHAM College at the recently held Regional Athletics Championships at Meadowglen in Epping. All performed extremely well in perfect conditions but it was Jacob Guyett in the Under 12 Boys who stole the show and ran an unbelievable sprint race to come 1st in 100m and 1st in the Triple Jump events with an awesome jump of over 10 metres. 

Jacob now has the opportunity to represent the College at the Victorian State Athletics Championships at Albert Park on 5 November 2025. Good Luck Jacob.

Division Volleyball Championships 

Our Year 5/6 Volleyball team were unbeatable in our Term 3 Inter School Sport Competition. This team progressed on to the Division Championships at the Diamond Valley Sports Centre in Greensborough this week playing in a round robin against Eltham PS and Diamond Creek East PS. Although we lost both games, it was a great learning experience for our students. Well done Cooper Lee, Jack Guyett, Benji Wagner, Leon Rentos, Adam Gluskie, Harvey Jenkin, James Harper, Henry Norton and Seb Alexander. 

ELTHAM College End of Year Celebration will be held on Wednesday 10 December 4.00pm – 6.00pm, directly after the conclusion of the Flag Pole Assembly.  

This special afternoon is a chance for our community to come together and celebrate the end of another wonderful year. Families can look forward to entertainment, fun games, and plenty of activities for all ages. 

A BBQ dinner will be provided, along with popcorn and ice cream for everyone to enjoy.

ELTHAM College is proud to once again support Big Group Hug, a wonderful community organisation that provides essential items to families experiencing hardship. This term, we are running a Toiletries Drive from Wednesday 5 November to Friday 14 November, helping to ensure that local families have access to basic personal care products that many of us take for granted. 

We’re inviting students, families and staff to get involved by donating shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes (individually sealed) and roll-on deodorant. These everyday essentials make a huge difference to those doing it tough and help families maintain dignity and wellbeing during difficult times. 

Collection boxes will be available in the Junior School Office, Year 7/8 Community Space, Year 9 Area and at the Entrance to the Senior School. 

Every donation, no matter how small, helps spread kindness and support within our wider community. Let’s come together to give a Big Group Hug and show how much care and compassion our school community can offer.
